Week 12 Wrap up; social networks and catch up

Week 11 On-Line Applications and Tools

It's amazing how much software you can get online! I haven't used Google Docs or Zoho before but will start now. I loved Google Docs but didn't find Zoho as easy to use.

Google Docs is so easy I'm hoping to use it for school holiday and HSC programs. Being able to share documentsallows a Branch to keep up-to-date with developments happening in Head Office.

Would love to be able to stop using USB's in the library - maybe Google Docs would allow this to happen.

Never purchase software again!!!!!

Week 10 Mashups

Mashups are great. After exploring all the ways I can use this function at home and for my kids assignments, I started to consider work applications. The use of mashups for storytime, advertising and local studies would modernise and enhance the way in which people receive information and improve their perception of the library. Campbelltown Council currently has a walking tour of the Campbelltown area. If they were to incorporate Google maps, showing historical site/buildings, tourist sites, burial sites or any other place of interest, the tour could be run as a virtual tour for visitors and locals or even as a study tour for students.

As a promotional tool the potential use of mashups is unlimited; posters, bookmarks, badges, handouts etc. Although I was very interested in PamL's comment on copyright infringements when using mashups. I will look into this further to see if it affects any of our planned promotional activities.

Overall I found mashups to be fun and educational. I'm sure we will be using this function regularly in the library.

Week 9 Podcasts and Audio

Really didn't know much about podcasts - only ever heard of them thru my kids. This week it was interesting to see what all the hoo ha is all about. I found the sites interesting and was particularly interested in the variety of podcasts available on the ABC site. It's amazing the different ways each site/institution uses podcasts.

As for the library, I agree with many of the comments already displayed. The use of podcasts for poetry readings, lectures, author interviews, HSC lectures and radio programs could really broaden the reach of library services. The advantages in home library services seem to be unlimited with access to all of the above and audio books as well as providing local information and updates to what's happening in their local area. Staff training is another area where this services could improve current procedure. As with most new technologies the ideas are unlimited but the reality is often caught up in red tape and IT reluctance - however there's no harm in dreaming.

Week 8 Answer Boards and Social Searching

I have enjoyed reading some of the weird and wonderful questions on the answer boards. Some of the answers cause me to be weary of the accuracy of the information but this is the case in any Internet open forum. I love the idea of the 'slam the boards' and from a mothers point of view appreciate the accuracy of the answers to questions my children may ask.
From a library point of view I think it's an opportunity to reach a wider audience and to encourage library participation. On the downside, I miss the opportunity to discuss the questions with the patrons; the where, how, why and when of a question. As part of the bigger picture I think that these answer boards ca be an excellent library tool.

Week 7 Tagging etc

Loved Del.icio.us !!!!! I'm already setting up a page that we can use to inform staff of material that is available for school projects that are requested every year. Very excited about this as I always seem to end up looking for this type of material year after year. Del.icio.us will save me a lot of time and effort.
Found the notes to set up the account inaccurate.

Technorati - took me a while to realise you need to use tag search to get better results. Found it time consuming.

Really enjoyed Librarything, played with it for a considerable amount of time and was amazed at the information available.Great if you have spare time to go thru and bookmark library related sites. As with many other things the problem is finding the time!

It's great that each week I seem to find something that can help improve my performance as a library assistant. This week it is definitely Del.icio.us - love it! love it! love it!
